Prices for roses skyrocket – and people think that their florist is overcharging them just because they can.  But what you should know is that florists actually don't have much choice in the price hike. It all starts with the grower. The growers control the prices because they control the supply, and on Valentine’s Day demand is at its peak.

The flowers we love are those fluffy, beautiful jewel toned vanda orchids and (wait for it) carnations. Here are the photos courtesy of Basem Hassan Photography:

(clockwise from top): The groom and groomsmen wore boutonnieres of vanda orchids with a foliage accent. The bride's bouquet was vanda orchids, carnations, calla lillies, and lemon leaf. The centerpieces were groupings of single flowers in the wedding palette with carnations, allium, and dendrobium orchids.

Of course the flowers were not as beautiful as our bride, Trisha, and her lovely husband, James, who were just so sweet and lovely. We loved working with them and thank them for letting us be a part of their day.

In this beginner's workshop, our students learned floral design basics (including greening and selecting flowers) and then they created an arrangement to take home. Plus, we had a little Sunday fun by sipping on mimosas and enjoying light fare.

We were so amazed at how talented our students were - we give them a A+!!

As we get ready for 2012, we had a few that we just can't wait for you to see - starting with Chris and Kim!

Chris and Kim got married on a fall day at the Liberty House in Jersey City. The Liberty House is a great venue with stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. It was the perfect backdrop for Chris and Kim's amazingly beautiful ceremony and reception (despite the tricky weather).

To create the modern romantic mood for their big day, we used lush flowers with soft textural elements for the personal flowers. Take a look at some of the photos by Julia Newman Photography...

(Clockwise from top) The bride's bouquet was an ivory dream with 'Patience' garden roses, lisianthus, zinnia, freesia, Queen Anne's lace, and astilbe (it smelled heavenly!). The bridesmaids' bouquets added a pop of pink with zinnias, garden roses, astilbe and pittosporum. And, the soft, simple groomsmen boutonneires were astilbe and pittosporum.

She was found around Montgomery Street (Museum area) and is so friendly we just can't believe she was a stray! If you have any leads, please let us know. We'd like to give her a good home, so come by the shop and say hello to Pippy, maybe she'll go home in your Christmas stocking!

Not long ago, we were lucky enough to style a table our favorite neighborhood "General Goods" store, Smith and Chang. This store is so much more than a "General Goods" store, it is a magical shop that makes you want to find a place for everything they have in stock in your home and your life.
Working on top of of gorgeous table (that was once an old ship's door), we created 2  seasonal  tablescapes.
1) Scarlet peonies, roses, gourds and chili peppers arranged in birchwood vases are nestled on a whimsical runner of moss, succulents,buds and blooms .
Beautiful pressed glass dishes at each place setting add a sweet touch to this rustic table.
2) An oversized vintage wooden box overflowing with seasonal blooms and gourds set atop the dinner table.
