Stunning - I love the variety, the 'tamed wildness' of the arrangement, something other than roses ... my wife was thrilled. Mother's Day Mason Jar Arrangements

Growing up, my grandmother's collection of mason jars in her basement held everything from pickled vegetables to her homemade black raspberry jelly. I still cherish one of her jars bearing a tiny label held with brittle tape that reads "butter beans '77."

Today, I use my old mason jars to hold freshly cut flowers from the garden and place them on the kitchen table for an instant memory of grandmother and her love. Those memories are what inspired us this Mother's Day.

Wedding Preview: Lucky in Love

While most of the country was focused on the Mega Millions jackpot on Friday night, we had the pleasure of providing florals for our wonderful client Laleh. Laleh's wedding was held at the fabulous Maritime Parc in Jersey City and we had so much fun creating her personal flowers including her bouquet and the bridesmaids' bouquets. Here is a little sneak peek...

The Bride's Bouquet

Inspired by the simplicity of Kate Middleton's bouquet, Laleh's bouquet features ranuncula, lisianthus, andromeda, parrot tulips and Queen Anne's lace.

The Bridemaids' Bouquets were very special because each bridesmaid wore a different color dress in the wedding ceremony. To bring all of the colors together, we included each color in the bridesmaid's bouquets. The flowers included spider mums, ranuncula, lisisanthsus, tulips and geranium. Take a look:

We may not have won the Mega Millions jackpot but at least we know our bride is Lucky in Love! Congratulations to the new couple!

Flower Favorite: Sweet Pea

While most use it as a term of endearment, sweet pea is a delicate and beautiful flower used alone or with complimentary flowers in arrangements. It is a flower favorite in the shop as well as in our bouquets and centerpieces.

Why do we love it? We can start with just the simple beauty of it. The feather soft blooms are so feminine and romantic. More importantly, they smell divine! The fragrance is not a traditional floral smell; but it is just heavenly.

Here are a few facts about the Sweet Pea from the California Cut Flower Commission:

Origins
Lathyrus odoratus, as sweet peas are properly known, derive their name from the Greek word, lathyros, for "pea" or "pulse," and the Latin word for "fragrant," odoratus. The delicacy of sweet peas, a delight to florists and gardeners alike, once limited the use and availability of this exceedingly fragrant member of the Fabaceae family. With more than 260 varieties in cultivation, sweet peas come in a broad color range, including white, purple, pink, lavender and red.

If you have been to the shop in the last few months, you may have noticed two new additions to our staff - Pippy and Longfellow!

Pippy is a loving, curious kitty who likes to interact with people. She loves to cuddle especially if you are working on your laptop!

Like his name, Longfellow is a very serious cat. He likes attention but he also likes to play hide and seek with his owner. As you can see in the photo, he is a handsome cat!

While we love them both, we are just foster parents to these lovely cats. If you would like to give them a permanent home, please call us or contact www.jerseycats.org to begin the adoption process!

Wedding By Design

We shared a sneak peek of this wedding on Facebook some time ago, but now that we have the insanely beautiful photos from Jennifer Sosa photography, we are so excited to show you our favorites from Lori and Hans' wedding.

Lori is an interior designer (she owns Beekman Lane - if you have never checked them out, trust us, do it! She is awesome! Here's the website: http://beekmanlane.com/ ) and she was an amazing client.

Given her background, she was VERY involved in the design process for her wedding. She came to the market with us and she collected all of her own centerpiece vessels. The collaboration was one of the best parts of the wedding (for both us!) and the end result was a stunning display of romantic flowers with art deco elements - it was truly a wedding by design.

Clockwise from top: The bride's bouquet featured garden roses, ranunculus, astilbe, veronica, lisianthus, Queen Anne's Lace, dusty miller, echeverria, geranium, silver brunia, and nigella. The groom and groomsmen's boutonnieres were comprised of silver brunia, scabiosa, and eucalyptus. The bridesmaids bouquets were seasonal dinner plate dahlias, dusty miller, nigella, and eucalyptus. The centerpieces at the Landmark Loew's Jersey Theater featured cymbidium orchids, lisianthus, nigella, fern, geranium, ranunculus, dendrobium orchids, seasonal foliage, and eucalyptus.

I just wanted to write a quick note of thank you for all your hard work and talent that made the flowers for Hans and my wedding so special. From the first wonderful meetings, to having the opportunity to visit the flower market, I cannot thank you all enough.
